AllStar Weekend

January 27-29, Ottawa was filled with excitement and some of the NHLs finest! The buzz around town was hockey hockey hockey and we couldn't get enough. My brother (Phil) and I were invited to the Governor General's residence for the launch of the HEROS program which is coming to Ottawa this year. The Hockey Education Reaching Out Society is a registered Canadian charitable organization committed to empowering children through ice hockey. The premise of H.E.R.O.S. is to use the game of hockey as a catalyst to attract youth to a program offering support for education self-esteem building and life skills training. The program focuses on boys and girls of diverse ethnicity from economically challenged neighborhoods. The program will be conducted in an environment of fun and safety where each child is considered to be a HERO. For more information checkout www.heroshockey.com The event was very special with speeches from the Right Honorable David Johnston, Eugene Melnyk and Gary Bettman. It was hosted by George Stroumboulopoulos, and he did an amazing job! All in all, it was a great day filled with some great inspiration! If you'd like to know more about the HEROS program, get in touch with me!

Welcome 2012

2011 was a great year and I don't know how 2012 will be able to top it?! I find myself saying this every year, but 2011 was really good to me! I quit making specific resolutions a while back since I wasn't sticking with them... So this year I decided to make a few general resolutions for 2012, here they are: - Get organized! My house, workspaces and everything else that could use organizing. - Travel. I want to the see the world, and it won't be possible this year but I hope to at least go to two different (and new) places this year. - Healthy living! I'm not getting any younger and this is the time to do it! I started playing team sports again in 2011, and I plan to continue this in 2012! Overall general better eating and being active :) - Follow through! When I have a project in mind, I will complete it! (this includes blogging more)! - All of the things! This is just an attitude I'd like to have for 2012 ;) I think for someone who doesn't make resolutions this list is pretty good! I hope everyone has a safe, happy and prosperous 2012. @lizzymac

This is Hugo

This is my cat. 20111120-033319.jpg He's a sweet little guy but is currently driving me crazy. He's overall a great cat! After all, who wouldn't want a cat that fetches, likes water, follows you around and snuggles with you. I know you might think I'm describing a dog, but this little guy is in fact a cat! 20111120-033758.jpg He's a menace to society, while drinking anything anywhere! But really he loves to drink. Not just water, he loves beer and if you have a glass anywhere near you, his paw will have been in it or he'll have just done his best to knock it over. Today Hugo sat in my sink as he's been doing for a while... 20111120-034443.jpg I turned on the water to see what would happen and to my surprise he was completely fine with it! He was happy to sit under the water and play and try to drink it! I'm just always shocked by his behaviour and I truly think that he's a dog trapped in a cats body. Which I'm totally ok with! Want to adopt a little kitty of your own? Check out the Ottawa Humane Society or a Humane Society in your area. In the words of Bob Barker, help control the pet population. Have your pet spayed or neutered.

Wine & Food

This weekend in Ottawa was the Annual Wine & Food Show at the Ottawa Convention Centre. I had the pleasure of attending on the Saturday which proved to be busy as the rumors said! Got there early on Saturday, it was around 2pm and the line was already starting to form. It didn't take long to get in, which was great! The smell of food drew us into the main room and it only took a few minutes to get our first few drinks! It didn't take long after that to get some food and I think my favorite was Petit Bill's slider! It was just excellent, the best part was the gorgonzola cheese. The Clocktower had some great sweet potato fries as well, but let's get to the drinks! My first was a Yellow Tail sparkling wine. Following that I sampled a number of different beers, white wines, whiskey, rum, sangria, tequilla, prosecco, and repeat! It was never ending! Here are my do's and don'ts: Do: - get there early - get two sheets of sampling tickets right away - wear flats - I was very thankful for that advice, but of you're only going to be there for a few hours, you'll be fine - pace yourself - there's lots to see and try - have fun Don't: - be the person escorted out by the police - goes along with the pace yourself - get separated - it happens but it's a pain to find each other. My cell reception was spotty but I always ended up finding my groups

Take chances, make mistakes & get messy!

Ms. Frizzle said it best! And although taking chances can be scary, making mistakes can even more terrifying and getting messy can be fun, all three are needed when it comes to learning!

This is why I've decided to share my little project with the world. We are off to a slow start but we're in no rush. What am I talking about you ask?

Let me be the first to introduce you to Raid Our Closets:

A website where my friends and I can sell the gently used items from our closets all at a reasonable cost.

The concept is simple. We take the best possible (non-profesional) pictures of the items we have, we give the best possible description and we let you pay either using PayPal or Cash on Delivery! You're probably wondering why we're using this type of website instead of just posting our things on Craigslist, Kijiji or Used Ottawa? The reason for this is twofold. First, because I wanted to really get to know the Shopify Platform. Secondly, I've been wanting to have a garage sale for a while and this seemed like a fun new "constant" garage sale.

Although the majority of our products are clothing, we do have a variety of products. Take a look around, share it with friends and let us know if you have any questions!

Cupcake Breakfast - French toast cupcakes with maple buttercream icing

Who says dessert can't be breakfast? They were pretty easy to make. They were very easy to eat! Since I had never baked these before I was a little nervous. I happen to have all the ingredients at home and I was ready to experiment! As the intoxicating smell of French toast filled my house, I knew this was a win! The cupcake itself is not very sweet, but the icing is extremely sweet! So it's a great balance. I wanted to share the recipe here to encourage others to try it! Good luck and Bon apétit!! French Toast Cupcakes INGREDIENTS Servings: 12 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour 1 1/2 tsp. baking powder 1/2 tsp. ground cinnamon 1/4 tsp. salt 1 cup sugar 1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, melted then cooled. 2 eggs 1 tsp. maple extract 1/2 cup milk DIRECTIONS Preheat your oven to 350 degrees. Line muffin tin with baking liners. Combine flour, baking powder, cinnamon, and salt in a mixing bowl. In a large bowl, whisk together butter, sugar, and eggs until combined. Then add maple extract. Alternate between whisking in flour mixture and milk into your liquid mixture. Make three additions of flour and two of milk. Beat until smooth. Pour batter into prepared pan and bake 20-25 minutes until golden brown and tops spring back when lightly touched. Cool cupcakes for 10 minutes, remove from pan and allow to cool completely before frosting. Maple Buttercream Icing INGREDIENTS Servings: 12 1 cup butter (2 sticks), softened 2 3/4 cups powdered sugar 2 Tbs. brown sugar 2 Tbs. maple syrup DIRECTIONS Place softened butter in a large bowl. Munny part 1

The obsession has started! Munny's are adorable toys from an American company called Kidrobot. They are blank figures you can decorate using pens, pencils, markers, paint, and other supplies or leave them as they are! A Munny doll is made out of vinyl and has movable joints. They come with 1 random accessory such as a carrot or a hat. Mine came with a phone :) They also come in a variety of sizes, I got a mini munny! The hardest part of the whole experience was deciding how to decorate it! There are so many possibilities that it took me longer to choose than to actually do. My one recommendation is to sketch out your ideas before tackling the actual doll. I think I did about 8 sketches before starting!

20110522-102904.jpg I used acrylic paint, and I chose to varnish my final product. It really depends on the type/quality of paint you use and what you want your munny to look like in the end.

20110523-121742.jpg The finished product is one of my fav tv characters, he has many hats, he's a beet farmer, sheriff's deputy and assistant to the regional manager at Dunder Mifflin. He is the one and only, Dwight Schrute! I'm not quite happy with his glasses, but this was my first attempt! I can't wait to get another one, looks like I'll be making a stop to Lost Marbles this week! If you have any questions about my munny please leave me a comment. Happy crafting folks!
